What Smoovin reads, stores and sends

Smoovin is a Chrome extension. It reads the rental listing you have open, keeps what you save on your own computer, and asks three public services for exchange rates and map data. If you turn them on, it also sends anonymous daily usage counts. This page explains exactly what that involves.

What Smoovin reads

On listing pages of SUUMO, GaijinPot Apartments, LIFULL HOME'S, and at home, Smoovin reads the listing you already have open: rent, fees, layout, address, stations and features. It does this inside your browser. The page itself is never sent anywhere; only the few details listed under “What's sent” below leave your computer. It runs only on those sites' listing pages, and on LIFULL HOME'Sbuilding pages to say that the page lists several rooms. It doesn't run on their search results or other pages, or on other websites.

What's stored, and where

Everything is kept in Chrome's storage for the extension, on your computer. Nothing is synced or backed up anywhere else.

  • Listings you save: the details read from the page, plus the nearby-places summary. When you open a saved listing's page again, Smoovin updates the saved copy and notes if the listing has ended.
  • Your settings: an exchange rate, if you set your own, and how you sort and filter the dashboard.
  • A note about removed listings: if Smoovin removes saved listings whose link no longer points to their portal, it keeps how many and when, so the dashboard can tell you. Dismissing the message deletes the note.
  • Usage counts, if you turn them on: each day's counts until they're sent, and the day Smoovin last sent them. Sent counts, and every count when you turn usage counts off, are deleted.
  • Caches, so pages load faster: exchange rates, address locations, nearby places, and station locations. Old entries are refreshed and then deleted automatically.

What's sent, and to whom

To show the listing you're looking at, Smoovin talks to these public services. Like any request on the internet, each one also reaches the service with your IP address. Smoovin adds nothing that identifies you. Usage counts, which are off unless you turn them on, are described next.

Usage counts (off unless you turn them on)

Usage counts are off unless you turn them on, on the welcome page or in the dashboard's Settings. While they're on, Smoovin counts on your computer, for each day: how many listings you viewed, saved, or it couldn't read on each site, and how often you opened the dashboard and compared listings. Once a day, the next time Chrome runs it, Smoovin sends the counts for the days before (up to the last 7) with its version number to Smoovin's server at usage.smoovin.app, which runs on Cloudflare.

Never sent: links, listing IDs, addresses or anything else from a listing; any account, install or device identifier; your language or browser version; or a time more precise than the day.

The server keeps the counts in Cloudflare's Workers Analytics Engine for three months, to see how Smoovin is used. It doesn't store your IP address and keeps no log of these requests. Cloudflare sees the address to deliver the request, and uses it only briefly, in memory, to limit how often one address can send.

To stop, turn usage counts off in Settings. Counts that haven't been sent are deleted at once, and nothing more is sent.

The uninstall survey

When you remove the extension, Chrome opens smoovin.app/goodbye, which forwards to a short survey on Google Forms with the extension's version filled in. Answering is optional. Only what you choose to submit is sent, and Google Forms collects it for us under Google's privacy policy.

Problem reports

When Smoovin can't read a listing, its panel offers Report a problem. The link opens a form on Google Forms in a new tab, with the site, the names of the details Smoovin couldn't read and its version filled in: never the page, its link or its content. Nothing is sent until you submit the form. The listing's link and your email address are optional answers you type yourself. Google Forms collects the answers for us under Google's privacy policy.

Translation

When Smoovin translates a listing's description or feature tags, it uses Chrome's built-in, on-device translator. The text is translated on your computer and is not sent anywhere. The first time, Chrome may download its translation model from Google; that download contains no listing text.

Map links

Smoovin can open a listing, its stations or the walk from the nearest station in Google Maps. These are ordinary links: nothing is sent to Google Maps until you click one, and Smoovin doesn't load any map code or use a map account.

When you click, a new tab opens on Google Maps with the place in the address: the listing's coordinates when the page gives them, otherwise its Japanese address or a station name. From then on Google Maps's own privacy policy applies.

Why the extension asks for its permissions

Each permission is there for one of the jobs above: reading listing pages on the supported sites, checking whether the tab you have open is a listing, reaching the three services, and keeping your data on your computer. Usage counts and the uninstall survey need no permission. Smoovin never reads or changes other websites or other traffic.

What Smoovin never does

  • No tracking or advertising, and no usage counts unless you turn them on.
  • No selling or sharing of your data.
  • No contact with rental agents or portals on your behalf.

Accounts

Smoovin doesn't have accounts yet, so there is no sign-in. Its only server receives usage counts, and only if you turn them on. Before accounts are introduced, this page will explain what an account stores, where it is kept and how to delete it.

Deleting your data

Remove a saved listing from the dashboard, or delete everything at once in the dashboard's Settings → Clear all data, which also deletes usage counts that haven't been sent. Uninstalling the extension also removes everything it stored.

This website

This site counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and, according to Cloudflare, collects no personal data. It records the page you visit, the page that linked to it, your browser, device type and country, and how quickly the page loaded. The extension sends it nothing.

Cloudflare, which hosts the site, keeps a short log of requests to it, including the page, your browser, country and IP address, for a few days, so problems can be investigated. The goodbye and report links pass through it on their way to the forms.

Otherwise the site is static: it sets no cookies and loads no other third-party scripts, or fonts from other servers.
