Getting help with Smoovin

How to use the extension, what to try when something doesn't work, and how to reach us.

Using Smoovin

  1. Find a listing. Start on SUUMO, GaijinPot Apartments, LIFULL HOME'S or at home. On any page that isn't a listing, click the Smoovin seal and it will guide you to one.
  2. See the breakdown. Click Smoovin at the bottom-right of the listing. You'll see the monthly rent, the move-in costs, the commute and anything else worth knowing, with every fee broken down below.
  3. Save the ones you like. Click Save to Smoovin. Saved listings update each time you open the listing again.
  4. Compare in the dashboard. Click Open in dashboard on a saved listing. Listings you saved from every site are in one place, where you can sort, filter and compare them side by side.

You can also open the dashboard from Smoovin in Chrome's Extensions menu (the puzzle piece), or pin it to the toolbar.

How we count explains how the fees are added up and why some are left out.

Smoovin doesn't appear on a listing

  • Reload the listing. Tabs that were already open when you installed Smoovin need a reload before it can run on them.
  • Check that it's a listing page. On search results and other pages, Smoovin shows a small seal instead, which can guide you to a listing. Click Smoovin in Chrome's Extensions menu to see what it makes of the page you're on.
  • Check that the extension is on. In Chrome, open Extensions from the puzzle-piece menu and make sure Smoovin is enabled.

Something is missing or looks wrong

  • To check a value against the listing: click the small i beside it in the panel, then Show in listing. Smoovin scrolls the page to where it read the value and marks it.
  • Smoovin says “Reload to read”: Chrome translated the listing before Smoovin could read it. Reload the page, or pick Japanese in Chrome's translate menu.
  • “Couldn't read this listing” or missing details usually mean the site changed its page. Use Report a problem in the panel: it tells us the site, the details that failed and your version, and never the page itself.
  • Nearby places or US dollars missing: the services behind them are sometimes busy. Use Retry in the panel, or try again later. The map link still opens the area in Google Maps.
  • No hubs listed: direct trains to hubs and English station names cover greater Tokyo, Fukuoka, Osaka and Kyoto. Elsewhere in Japan the fees, maps and nearby places still work.

Your saved listings and settings

Everything you save stays in Chrome on your computer. In the dashboard, Settings sets your own exchange rate, turns the anonymous usage counts on or off, brings back the “Not sure where to start?” offer if you turned it off on a site, and clears all saved data. Removing the extension deletes everything it stored. The Privacy page lists exactly what is stored and sent.
